Follow these steps to get ready for moving day

1-2 months before moving

  • Call Polanski Moving for a free estimate
  • Hold a garage sale
  • Fill out Change of Address forms
  • Make necessary travel arrangements (airline, bus, car and hotel rental)
  • Transfer any memberships with churches, clubs or civic organizations
  • If required, obtain medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories
  • If required, ask your doctor and dentist for referrals and transfer prescriptions
  • If required, open a checking account in your new city
  • Check the laws and requirements of your new city regarding home-based businesses, business licenses or any special laws that might be applicable to you
  • Record serial numbers of electronic equipment
  • Make arrangements for transporting pets
  • Use up food items to reduce packing and spoilage

2-4 weeks before moving

  • Switch utility services to new address. Notify electric, disposal, water, newspaper, magazine subscription, phone and cable companies of your move.
  • Arrange for help on moving day
  • Hold a second garage sale
  • Confirm travel reservations
  • Reserve elevator if moving from an apartment
  • Have appliances serviced for moving (Speak to your personal moving consultant)
  • Clean rugs and clothing and wrap them for moving
  • Plan ahead for any special needs of infants
  • If required, close your bank accounts and have your funds wired to your new bank. Before closing, be sure there are no outstanding checks or automatic payments that haven’t been processed
  • Collect valuables from safe-deposit box. Make copies of any important documents before mailing or hand carry them to your new address
  • Check with your insurance agent to ensure you’ll be covered through your homeowner’s or renter’s policy during the move, or take insurance through Polanski Moving
  • Defrost your freezer and refrigerator. Place deodorizer inside to control odors
  • Give a close friend or relative your travel route and schedule so you may be reached if needed

Moving day

  • Double check closets, shelves, attic and garage are empty
  • Carry important documents, currency and jewelry yourself
  • Carry travelers’ checks for quick, available funds.
  • Ensure movers have all your destination details. Exchange phone numbers & e-mail addresses, etc.
  • Be prepared to pay to movers as we only accept cash, cheques or credit cards

At your new home

  • Renew your driver’s license, auto registration.
  • Shop around for new insurance policies, especially auto coverage.
  • Revise your will and other legal papers to avoid longer probate and higher legal fees.
  • Locate the hospitals, police stations, veterinarian and fire stations near your home.
