These packing tips will help ensure a secure move

1. Keep these supplies handy for packing:

Boxes, bubble wrap, newsprint, marking pen, tape and scissors.

2. Use strong boxes and containers

Purchase special boxes for dishes, wardrobe and other special items. Make sure your boxes can be secured tightly.

3. Pack technology in its original box

Pack audio-video, computer and other similar hi-tech equipment in its original packaging, if possible. Label cables and tighten screws for easier unpacking. Tape any removed screws to the objects they were removed from.

4. Don’t lift too much

Avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one moving box. They are not designed to handle unlimited amounts. Also, yourself and the movers will need to move several boxes over the course of your move.

5. Label each box with the following:

  • Which room it should go in
  • Whether it is fragile
  • If it should be loaded last so it will be unloaded first

6. Cushion your contents

Cushion contents with packing material such as bubble wrap, newsprint or tissue.
Save room by using towels and blankets to wrap fragile items and leave other soft items in the dresser drawers.

7. Pack your books

Pack all of your books tightly on end in small boxes. If musty smelling, sprinkle talcum powder between the pages and wrap the book before packing. Leave musty books stored for a few months to eliminate the odor.

8. Wash your rugs and draperies

Have your rugs and all of your draperies cleaned before you move. After they are cleaned, leave them in wrappings for the move.

9. Clear the medicine cabinet and get your valuables

Make sure to collect all of your medicines. Pack medicines in a leak proof container to safely transport them. Be sure to carry all of your valuables with you.
